How to Find a Good Local Cat Sitter in Portishead

Leaving your cat at home whilst you're away, is never quite as simple as it sounds and can be a source of worry for you.
Cats are creatures of routine, and the right sitter can make all the difference between a stressed cat and a settled one.
Here's what to look for
Look for someone local. A sitter based in Portishead will know the area, can get to you quickly if anything comes up, and won't be juggling long journeys between clients. Local knowledge also means they understand where the vets are nearby.
Most importantly, read reviews, but talk to the sitter directly too. Reviews are useful, but a phone call or message tells you a lot about how someone communicates and communication is often the biggest factor in whether a booking goes smoothly.
Ask about a meet-and-greet
Any good sitter should offer to visit your house before the booking begins. This gives your cat a chance to get used to a new person on their own terms, and gives you a chance to talk through routines, medication, hiding spots and anything else that matters.
Check they understand cat behaviour, not just feeding. A good sitter reads body language, respects a nervous cat's space, and knows the difference between a cat who wants fuss and one who'd rather be left alone. This matters more than most people think.
The cat sitter should also run through what services they offer and gather information from you on how best to look after your cat whilst your away.
Ask what happens if something goes wrong
A reliable sitter will have a plan for emergencies. This will include who they contact, how quickly, and what steps they'd take. If they can't answer this clearly, that's worth noting and possibly trying someone else who is more experienced.
It is also important to consider an independent cat sitter rather that someone who is registered with an app-based platform. Independent, local sitters often provide more consistency than app platforms. Continuity matters for cats, who tend to do best with a familiar face.
Most importantly, trust your cat's reaction. At the meet-and-greet, watch how your cat responds. Cats are good judges of character, and a sitter your cat warms to is usually a good sign.
